Another point: While the stations are making their tons of money the on commission sales staff can't get clients' ads scheduled so they don't get paid. The station gets rich while the staff gets screwed.
Terrific column, Dave, with details on billing etc. that I hadn’t realized. Doug Burns, the Carroll IA newspaperman, theorizes that more political advertising is moving to community newspapers again, probably because TV time gets so saturated that peeps react with confusion & boredom at it all. I subscribe to 8 newspapers and I sense Doug is right on this. But maybe this is just so much dreaming by two old print newsies. Thoughts?
Anecdotally, I think I have seen more political ads in my local weekly paper here in Humboldt this year than in the past. Would be an interesting topic for a poll among members of the Iowa Newspaper Association (If they do member polls). With the increasing number of TV channels, sites, and news sources, it would seem to be a bigger challenge these days to select ad placement to hit target audiences.

The PAC ads seem to be the most dishonest, negative and disgusting in my opinion. Glad they have to pay more.
Good point, Jim.

Chuck, I have no way to gauge that. Doug might be right. Community newspapers NEED ad dollars so I hope that's true.
