Definitely continue darts and laurels. Another CJR feature was “The Lower Case”. Humorous headlines and bloopers from journalism. That would be good too.
Another yes vote on Darts and Laurels. I also noticed Iowa’s low priority reporting compared to other national outlets. Perhaps part of the problem of why the caucuses are now gone.
I appreciate this information. I think this is why newspapers are dying, not the online portal. Newspapers don't give us information we need in a timely manner, even on their websites. I know I am not going to renew my local Nevada Journal because there is almost nothing in it about Nevada. It's called the Nevada Journal.
I always had trouble instilling a web first mentality in my students. Looks like that has carried over to the professional sites. There’s no excuse for not keeping websites updated.
Keep holding their feet to the fire, Dave. I'm not a journalist but I too wondered at the bare minimum mention of Iowa losing its first in the nation caucus standing. No interviews with Grassley or Ernst or the Governor. ??
Yes to continue. yes to a version of ‘lower case’ (note use of lower case letters). Instead of Darts and Laurels, I would suggest a light hearted competition for a new title, like Praise and Pokes from a Pugilistic Pundit
I tried to think up a suitable substitute for a title but couldn't come up with anything. Thanks for the suggestion! Though I hope my writing isn't pugilistic. Steve Coon weighs in below with another possibility.
I enjoy alliteration, which explains the use of pugilistic. Your writing is great. I am curious if you wrote earlier in your career. Regardless, it is substack I enjoy
When I was working at the Voice of America (VOA) in the mid-70s, we had weekly "Rocks and Flowers" from the Chief of the News Division. They were both embarrassing and helpful. Yes, keep sending the Darts and Laurels.
I love this type of column! Full of short, sweet, top-of-mind news bits and tips. Please keep it up! PS: As a former journalist, I think all your columns are especially needed and timely.
Love the darts and laurels. Keep it up please! I also loved Amanda Rooker's on-scene reporting that night.
I agree, please continue this column!

The bloopers were my favorite part of the magazine.
Thank you for calling out deficiencies in our local journalism. Iowans deserve better.

Dave - I enjoy reading this. Thanks.

Yes, great idea. I enjoy the critiques.

Exactly. Thanks, Cliff.

Yes! Keep it coming, Dave!
It's an excellent initiative, Dave. Need to continue. Thanks.

Thanks, Rick! Go Cards!

Ralph, yes, I was a reporter for many years before moving into management. I’ve done a lot of writing and it’s nice to be back at it!

Rocks and Flowers? The news chief must have been a gardener. I'm a tennis player, so maybe Faults and Aces?? :)
That works well, too:)
Good idea. Keep this going.
BTW, IPR also sent a reporter to the DNzc meeting. Best. Mary Ellen Miller

Thanks so much, Amy.
I liked the column and I live in Nashville. Always interested in journalism and my native state.
