The mystery that started on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend 42 years ago
And still isn't solved..
The first column I wrote for the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative two years ago was about how I was the first reporter to stumble across the disappearance of newspaper carrier Johnny Gosch, on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, 1982.
Because it was my first column, I didn’t have many subscribers, so I thought I’d send out a link to it in case you haven’t read it.
It’s now been 42 years, and still no answer to the question what happened to Johnny on that peaceful Sunday morning, a morning much like today. As I drove to church that morning, I sure never dreamed I’d run across something we’d still be talking about 42 years later.

Dave, this remains as compelling as when you wrote it two years ago. Thanks for printing it again. Such sadness for both families.
Yes-I remember too. And how Norene Gosch was bashed for doing all she could think of to find her son. She raised awareness of child abduction and what we now call human trafficking.
