Agree except with the “he can’t help it” part. Turning 80 is not an excuse for boorish behavior toward others, especially women. His MAGA dream is to pull us all back to the Dean Martin era where “dames” did what they were told and rich white men ruled the country. As the saying goes, he was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.

NBC wasn’t alone in 2016 in providing his freak show way too much airtime. CNN fell into that trap, too. It was good for ratings. I think and hope most legitimate news outlets learned from the mistakes made in 2016.

And when it comes to his party members in Congress who certainly are cognizant of Trump’s behavior, I don’t know which frighten me more: those who actively turn a blind eye or those who relish every bit of monstrous rhetoric coming from his pie hole.

Dave Busiek's avatar

They’re all just as guilty as he is, because they have the power to do something about it and they don’t. Averting one’s eyes doesn’t excuse their silence.

I am hoping that her journalistic integrity is a lesson to all the reporters covering that pedophile. THye never used mohave problems asking hard hitting questions, calling people out of their lies. I am always amazed at the way he gets a walk for all his ridiculous bloviating with barely a mention of his idiocy in the media.

Dave Busiek's avatar

He has a big microphone (unlike the one he stepped on!) so he just says the same things over and over and over, knowing one fact-check can never overcome his non-stop blather.

Joan Zwagerman's avatar

Go, Kristen Welker! Can you imagine if Joe Biden had said any of these demeaning things while being interviewed. The uproar would never stop. Trump says it and it’s crickets. Thank you, Dave!

Dave Busiek's avatar

Joan, this one is making more noise than the usual crickets! But it doesn’t matter to his cult. They’d follow him right off a cliff.

Wini Moranville's avatar

What’s really sad is that everything he did in that exchange made his base happy.

Dave Busiek's avatar

Exactly right. They only watch Fox “news” and no anchor there would ever challenge him on behalf of their viewers.

He is particularly awful to female journalists. Unsurprising, since respect for women is not exactly his strong suit.

Dave Busiek's avatar

Right. Ask E. Jean Carroll or Stormy Daniels.

I wonder if he also told them, “Thank you, darling, have a good time,” when he was finished.

Add this to the never ending list of aberrant, unimaginable corrupt and disgusting behavior from a man who should have been impeached by a party whose members include Iowa’s two senators. Aren’t we proud of the character of our two elected officials!

Dave Busiek's avatar

Many of us are not! As Rob Sand says, time to rotate the crops.

Trump is a real danger as his lies piled on top of the years of lies do not make some kind of "truth". His continued mental health issues will escalate as Trumps "best people" continue to wrack ruin on our country. The quick anger of the confused/demented could in this fluid situation lead to unthinkable harm. For example nukes exploding over NYC or LA !! Who is going to make sure this horror can't happen ? As things are right now I see NOOOO ONE.

My hope, maybe naive of me, is that she will inspire more members of the media to stand their ground, keep with the questioning, and defend their associates when they are insulted. We'll see. Right now, Kristen Welker is my hero.

Andrea Dorn's avatar

I have that same hope inside of me. I thought for sure it would be that CNN reporter, but she hasn't been persistent enough so far. And the idea that other reporters wouldn't be more supportive of their colleagues makes me sad. Why don't they stand together?

Dave Busiek's avatar

Andrea and Connie, I had this very discussion last evening with some friends. They were wondering why in a news conference setting, reporters don’t back each other up, and ask follow up questions if Trump lies to a prior reporter’s question. My response, somewhat flippantly, is that journalists couldn’t organize a church bake sale if our lives depended on it. We’re independent and competitive with each other. Cooperation with other reporters is not in our DNA. But in a one-one-one interview, reporters should do exactly what Welker did. Make him back up his specious claims.

This was such a perfect display of honesty and integrity taking on a bully and a fraud. But let's not lose sight of what he was doing. Further cementing the false narrative of voter fraud, as he mentioned the California governor race numerous times. And FOX News is playing right along as we head into literally the most important midterms election in our history. We HAVE to do a better job of repeatedly calling out FOX News for the BS liars that they are. It's still the most watched "news" source in the country for the largest single block of the voting public. And if they believe elections will be rigged this fall, pity our flailing democracy and the rule of law and accountability.

Andrea Dorn's avatar

Are they really spinning it that way? I can't bring myself to watch them. I just know that websites and independent media are all talking about this interview with pride.

Dave Busiek's avatar

I’d call them out, but I NEVER watch them. Couldn’t last two minutes without turning away in disgust

Another great article Dave. As I watched the interview yesterday I wondered how any congressman cannot realize what a deranged man we have in the White House. He can’t let go of the fact that he lost the 2020 election – reality be damned.

I wonder - will his base of lemmings blame the messenger for asking difficult questions and demanding facts to support his outrageous lies?

Dave Busiek's avatar

Probably. I can hear them now. “So disrespectful of our nation’s leader.”

Terri Hale's avatar

Welker is a breath of fresh air! And, as Maya Angelou once said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them..."

We know who Kristen is. And we have more than enough REAL evidence to know who trump is. I am hoping that more and more people will take their blinders off and oust all trump acolytes from office in November!!

Thank you, Dave!

Dave Busiek's avatar

Hope you’re right, Terri! I’ll never understand how anyone voted for him, but the perhaps sadder truth is way too many people simply aren’t paying attention.

Larry Anderson's avatar

Thank you Dave for another great article.

Three cheers and thank you Kristen Welker and Kaitlin Collins. We can say thank you to Pope Leo XIV, from a different perspective.

I wish we could say thank you to Iowa’s six Federal politicians. But lapdogs don’t speak up, they just bark and whine.

Absolutely one of your best columns, Dave! I appreciate your “telling it the way it is” approach and hope the mid-terms will reign this despicable person in to limit the damage he’s doing to our country. Thanks for your very thoughtful and powerful commitment to telling the truth about the challenges we face. Keep up your great work!

Thanks, Denny. Four years never felt so long!
