A quick tip if you want to fact-check tonight's VP debate
The moderators, sadly, don't plan to fact-check
Tonight’s VP candidate debate between Tim Walz and James David Vance will be hosted by CBS News, from its broadcast center in New York.
The network says it does not plan to have moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan fact-check the candidate statements. That’s too bad, because I thought ABC News handled it properly during the Harris-Trump debate.
But CBS News plans to put a QR code on screen. You can take a snapshot of it with your smartphone that will take you to CBS News website where a team of network fact-checkers will inform you about the veracity of candidate statements.
Viewers will need to multitask on two screens, but I certainly plan to give it a try to see what the fact-checkers catch and what slides by. More important, which candidate stretches the truth and which doesn’t!
All other broadcast and cable news networks will simulcast the debate, but without the QR code. If you want to take advantage of it, be sure to tune in CBS.
Whether you’re able to watch or not, I will tune in and am planning an analysis for you first thing Wednesday morning.
One of my favorite writers in the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative is Cheryl Tevis, who packs a lot of information into her columns each week. I recommend this past weekend’s column about who’s really to blame for high food prices - and it’s not the Biden-Harris administration.

I don’t understand why news organizations sponsor debates or use journalists to “moderate” them if they aren’t going to act like journalists. Any “performer” can read a predetermined question and turn to the second debater and say “the next question goes to … .” Might as well have a game show host moderate the debate instead of turning experienced broadcast journalists imto traffic cops. It’s insulting to them and the profession.
CBS "moderator" Margaret Brennan is also a director at the liberal-fascist Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) which has controlled the US govt and media since WW2. Most of the "Biden team" are CFR members, including Blinken, Yellen, Austin, Mayorkas, Burns, Zients, and dozens more.
So much for "unbiased" journalism. Here's a recent sample: cfr.org/event/tackling-evolving-threat-landscape-homeland-security-2023
